Harlem, 2018: The following photographs are part of a body of work formed during a three week arts intensive study called New York Still. We explored city portraiture by capturing the lives of men, women, and children and their environments in our chosen boroughs. My partner and I were in Harlem.
turning back
it is in that unerring wandering
fear is shed like day- old ribbons
slipping from hair with no hold
growing to expect
the weight and grip of air’s water
sending perfectly singed slivers
from silken to stretched
the gaping of coils behind the ear
like the afternoon sun yawning its valiance
all fully realized
gravity unbuckled in a great slight of hand
sending every unspoken yearning up
with the muddied remnants of gravel
scattered clouds leave the squeal of urgent certainty
in their wake
